DIY Hot Wheels Keychain: Turning the El Segundo Coupé Clip into Daily Gear

DIY Hot Wheels Keychain: Turning the El Segundo Coupé Clip into Daily Gear

If you’re a fan of die-cast cars or just love unique, practical Everyday Carry (EDC) items, you’ve probably seen Hot Wheels floating around social media turned into keychains. But while most custom Hot Wheels keychains require drilling holes, modifying axle pins, or attaching tiny screw-eyes into plastic baseplates, Mattel actually released a perfect built-in solution: the Hot Wheels Experimotors El Segundo Coupé Clip.

Here is how you can take this sleek, wheel-less Hot Wheels casting and turn it into a stylish keychain!

What Makes the El Segundo Coupé Clip Special?

Unlike standard Hot Wheels cars designed for track racing, the El Segundo Coupé Clip (from the Experimotors series) is designed specifically to be functional pocket art.

  • No Wheels to Catch on Pockets: It features a solid, smooth metal body with a flat underside rather than free-rolling wheels. This means it slides easily in and out of your pocket without snagging.

  • Built-in Keyring Slot: The rear of the car comes pre-molded with an integrated slot specifically designed to hold a key chain or jump ring securely.

  • Durable Die-Cast Feel: It retains that signature, heavy-duty metallic Hot Wheels feel in a deep blue finish with iconic flame graphics.

Materials & Tools Needed

  • Hot Wheels "El Segundo Coupé Clip" (Unboxed or on blister card)

  • Standard Keyring with Chain / Jump Ring (or a sturdy Carabiner)

  • Jewelry Pliers or Needle-Nose Pliers (for opening/closing jump rings)

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Unbox the Coupe

Free the car from its blister pack! Keep the card if you’re a collector, but this build is all about making a functional item you can carry every day.

Step 2: Prepare Your Keychain Hardware

Grab a standard split ring attached to a short chain link and jump ring.

Step 3: Attach to the Integrated Rear Slot

Using your pliers, gently open the jump ring (or thread the end ring) through the small molded slot at the rear of the car body.

Step 4: Secure and Test

Pinch the jump ring closed tightly so it won't slip out during daily use. Attach your house keys, car keys, or pocket clip to the main ring!

The Verdict

The El Segundo Coupé Clip is hands-down one of the coolest functional castings Hot Wheels has produced. It’s smooth, durable, looks fantastic next to your keys, and doesn't bulge uncomfortably in your pocket like a wheeled car would.
